Food Alchemy with ‘She’…Fall Food, Medicines and Teas.

Rather than consume foods based on trends and wanting a specific outcome, learn how to listen for what your body, mind, heart and soul needs/wants to contribute to your well being. During the Fall months, it is a time to nourish your inner and outer being. There are many foods that are available to help you maintain well being. A simple way to support your well being is to have a few dried flowers and herbs for simple teas and cooking. The following flowers and herbs can support you during the fall season: hibiscus, chamomile, fennel, marshmallow root, licorice root, and ginger root.

First, Hibiscus Tea is a yummy robust red tea. It is balancing, replenishing, peps you up and protects.  In addition, it helps manage your blood pressure, weight, and protects your liver. Also, Hibiscus has anti-cancer properties, an anti-inflammatory, relieves menstrual pain, an anti-depressant, improves digestions, and remedies thirst.

Next, Chamomile Tea will cultivate the calm from within. Furthermore, it is balancing, replenishing and proactive medicine for your well being. Chamomile tea was used by the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians as a salve for wounds to expedite healing. It works especially well treating burn wounds and has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant effects. The tea has a calming affect on your entire system and is the perfect beverage for before bedtime.

Third, Fennel Tea is abundant and generous. This magical bulb lends a helping had by warding off indigestion, supports the heart, enhances the skin, anti-cancer causing properties, support bone health, weight loss and seasonal allergies. It works well in a wide variety of dishes and simply in a warm cup of water.

marshmallow root

In addition during Fall, the marshmallow root (Yao Hu Kuu) and the flowers are nature’s gift to nourish, support and revive. Marshmallow root helps with repairing and revive the skin barrier. For hair, the root binds to the proteins to make strands look thicker.
Because of marshmallow root’s cooling and moisturizing it is most appropriate for use by people who have dry, brittle or damaged hair. People with skin conditions that are irritated, red and/or inflamed might find it useful, too.

The leaves of the plant have been used traditionally to make poultices for skin inflammation and wounds, insect bites, burns, infections, and ulcers. A gummy substance (mucilage) found in both the leaves and roots, turns into a gel when mixed with water; it has been used to coat the throat to relieve irritation and dry cough and to treat asthma, bronchitis, stomach ulcers and inflammation. Supports the bladder, heart, large intestines and lungs.

Marshmallow is considered a healer, welcomes us to soften and will soothe that which is irritated.

 

Another Fall gift, Licorice root ( Gan Kao), an adaptogen herb, licorice root can be found growing in Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia, an ancient remedy used to remedy and heal many conditions. In addition, helps give you stamina, relieve thirst and works well with other plants. It is considered by Chinese Medicine as a guiding plant the beings out the other plants benefits and leads the medicine to where it will be most beneficial…a natural leader.

In Chinese medicine, anti-inflammatory licorice root has been used for coughs, fatigue, colds, gastro intestinal issues, and female reproductive issues. One of the most widely use plants in Chinese Medicine. Supports the spleen, stomach, heart and lungs. All of which supports…digestion, blood flow, Qi generator and water nourishing the body. Finally, in Egypt it was used in the tombs to assist in the afterlife.

All and all this guiding root will lead and boost you with what is needed in the Fall month’s.

Finally, sweet ginger (Sheng Jiang-fresh and Gan Jiang-dried) another Fall friend and Medicine. It loves to be paired with other plants. It is has heat that ranges from warm (fresh) to hot (dried) and is pungent in taste. The medicinal benefits include relieving nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness, cold, coughing, food poisoning, asthma, abnormal uterine bleeding and pain. It benefits the stomach, heart, kidney, lungs and spleen. The heat helps expel the disharmony and stop from further invasion.
The root or underground stem (rhizome) of the ginger plant can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried as a spice, in oil form, or as juice. Ginger is part of the Zingiberaceae family, alongside cardamom and turmeric. A great culinary companion in Asian cuisine. It is commonly produced in India, Jamaica, Fiji, Indonesia, and Australia.
A tea when paired with some garden friends can restore your well being and harmonious balance between Yin and Yang energy.
