Mind Food

In Ayurveda, fall nourishes and balances the air and ether elements. Rather than allowing the mind to become a runaway train, it’s best to drop into your heart with the earth beneath your feet. The tendency to worry and ruminate invites encroaching emotions of grief and anger into the mix, creating a relay circuit between your heart and mind. Meanwhile, Chinese Medicine offers a preemptive ode to your lungs and liver, which are associated with the fall and spring seasonal transitions.
Subconsciously, we prepare to receive the feminine and return the masculine to our brothers and sisters in the Southern Hemisphere, all of which can be supported by anchoring into the earth’s energy, the sweet spot of late summer. A simple practice for the rest of this lunar cycle is to lie on the earth daily. Lie on your back directly on the ground or with a cotton towel or blanket. Gently gaze toward the sky. Observe your breath in and out. Without force, allow your mind and heart to clear, feeling the unconditional support of all the elements. This simple action offers a respite from mental and emotional turmoil. As a bonus, the practice will create ease in the coming weeks and months.
Body Food

Simple Practice for Warm Late Summer/ Early Fall Days: Lie Low, Move Slow
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): Stomach/Spleen, Late Summer, Earth Element
Ayurveda: Agni/Digestion, Pitta-Kapha Dosha
Late Summer Movement for Stomach & Spleen (TCM + Ayurveda)
Gentle Walking After Meals
TCM: Keeps Spleen Qi moving, prevents stagnation.
Ayurveda: Supports Agni (digestive fire) without taxing Vata. Best done slowly, especially after lunch (the main meal of the day).
Twists (Seated or Supine)
TCM: Massages Stomach/Spleen, improves assimilation.
Ayurveda: Twists stoke Samana Vayu. Samana Vayu plays a pivotal role in processing and assimilating everything you take in—food, breath, emotions, and sensory perceptions. It is responsible for processing energy for effective use within the body, balancing absorption and elimination.
Horse Stance (Squats with Knees Facing Outward, Low Squat)
TCM: Grounds Earth energy, strengthens legs (where Earth meridians run).
Ayurveda: Grounds Kapha, strengthens the root, and supports Apana Vayu (downward energy for elimination and grounding at the root chakra).
Qi Gong “Shaking Tree” (Gentle Bouncing)
TCM: Clears dampness, supports the Spleen by moving stagnant Qi.
Ayurveda: Balances Kapha heaviness, awakens circulation without overheating Pitta.
Breathwork into Belly (Diaphragmatic Breathing, aka Box Breathing/Sama Vritti) Breath inhale up for 5 seconds, hold breath for 5 seconds, exhale for 5 seconds, hold out for 5 seconds. (repeat 8-13 times)
TCM: Massages Stomach/Spleen, calms overthinking (the Spleen’s “worry” emotion).
Ayurveda: Strengthens Prana and Samana Vayu, stabilizing digestion and mental clarity.
Gentle Forward Folds
TCM: Soothes the Stomach, calms the nervous system, reduces worry.
Ayurveda: Pacifies Vata (overactive mind) and Pitta (intensity).
Inspiration
The Late Summer Earth element in TCM emphasizes finding center, nourishment, and grounding. In Ayurveda, keep Agni steady, avoiding excessive strain, overheating, or skipping grounding practices. As inspired, Stay calm. Your natural state of being.
